Busan Firework Festival

What goes around comes around saying is perfectly true, do you know that even though the BIFF (Busan International Film Festival) is over, however we will have another major event soon in Busan.

Located in Gwangan beach with the famous Gwangan bridge as the background, the Busan International Firework Festival (부산 세계불꽃축제), is an event that held annually since it's first show in 2005. On 2011 due to the popularity of the year before, the event was held for more than a week!!

This year the event will be start on Evening of 24th October and the major show will be held on 25th October as usual with the Gwangan Bridge as the background. Nevertheless, there will be another event such as the Concert that can be enjoyed in Busan Citizen Park on 24th October, so what are you gonna waiting for again, join us and book the place ASAP and enjoy the festival, not only the festival but also the laser light show directly after the festival.

Universities in Busan (part 2)

We talked about Kyungsung and Pukyong University area before and if you think about University in Busan you will think about Busan National University (부산대학교) as Busan's best leading university and one of the best in the country and considered as an National University. This University was established in 1946 and since that time has earned its own reputation. Hosted some undergraduate and graduate schools and consists of Korean and foreigners as their students, this University is located in Geumjeong-gu area and in Subway line #1 부산대학교역.

Due to a big number of students, this area is not only pack with housing and stuffs but also packed with Restaurants, bars, shops, and street vendors -here you can find a lot of traditional handmade stuffs and budget range food. Let me tell you guys about it one by one then;

Some of my friends told me that this place is a good place to party around during weekend; bars and restaurant around here are open until wee hour. For budget food you can find a lot like D.deli and Sushida that sell Korean food with western style shop, If you high about western food, you can eat choose to eat in The brunch that open not only during brunch hour but also during afternoon, the food is nice around 8500KRW per portion, Pasta Buono is the right choice to eat Italian Pasta with cheap price. I f you just want to hang around and talk with your friends, beside chain coffee shop such as caffe bene or angel-in-us maybe you can try to come to Cloudtree coffee shop, the shop is quite large and the atmosphere is really nice.

Besides cosmetics, clothes are one of the basic needs in Korea, you can find a lot of Korea's product clothes which usually nice, trendy and up to Koreans fashions, you can visit COCORO MARKET 코코로 마켓 that sell nice clothes with student price!! If you are an animal lovers, maybe you should come to visit this place, it's a big pet shop that frequent visited by the local. It's kinda big and nice to visit if you like, not only dog and cat, they have birds too.

Universities in Busan (part 1)

Do you realize that the spring semester gonna start soon? I guess so of you is preparing everything to go back to school, it's nice isn't it? You can meet your friends and hang around again, but leaving home always give me ennui feeling though.

For this post we will tell about some Universities in Busan. Busan; not only famous for their beach, and seafood but it host some great University where bunch of crowd of youngster and foreigners are gather around here. Busan National University (부산대학교), Pukyong University (부경대학교) and last but not least, the neighbour of Pukyong University which is Kyungsung University(경성대학교).

For now I am gonna tell you about the Universities that located not too far from Our Hi Korea Hostel. If you take subway line #2 you can find this station Kyungsung University. Pukyong University station 경성대부경대역, by this station you can reach both of the university. Student, merchants, and everyone else can be found here. Student budget restaurant are the best choice in here, you can find a lot of foreigners here. I heard from my friend that around here there is one language cafe and hostel where foreigners from several countries ; not only english speaking country but also another languages; are gather around and they will act as practice friends for whatever language the Korean's students wish to practice to, I think this place is a nice place, however this is not the place you will want to go if you want to eat as basically they only provide this place for practicing and talking. 

In this area, you can find cheap mexican grilled food that one of my friend told me that it won't cost you 5000KRW to eat doritos. Budget considered restaurant!! However you can always eat in LA Bella Citta and Outdor Kitchen if you have more money. 야오샨 and 항토집 굴국밥.밀면 are nice place to eat if you have korean food craving.

In here besides food and cute cafe such as 은하수 다방 or Apple Teen you can find a lot of clothes and accessories stores. One of the biggest Uniqlo store in town is located in this area, and there is Retro Closet 레트로 클로젯 to buy accessories.

All about Haeundae 해운대 from precious eyes to beloved stomach

As our beloved Hostel is located in Haeundae-gu, this time I will share about the Haeundae that I know, it's more than just beach, you know. To reach Haeundae, you can take public bus 1003 or with subway line #2, there are 2 stations that can bring you to Haeundae, Dongbaek station and the more popular Haeundae station. To go directly to the beach Exit 5 will bring you closer while Exit 7 can direct you to Hi Korea Hostel.

In here besides affordable guesthouse such as Hi Korea hostel, you can find motels and hotels; Novotel Ambassador, Westin and Haeundae Grand Hotel are fine choices. Besides playing around the beach it self, you can visit Busan Aquarium, Dongbaek island, beautiful -especially at night- Gwangan Bridge and art and cultural street of Dalmaji road and Sfunz Square to shop around, besides near the Haeundae itself there are lots of clothes shops and cosmetic shops and of course restaurants.

Now about the restaurants, and if you are avid food lovers, you will definiteluy love Haeundae to eat around as my self, from the cheap budget food to 5-stars fine dining, with it various taste offered, the traditional Korean food such as 고삼이 생선구이 Go sam-I that sell fried fish such as mackerel, Korean traditional BBQ restaurant 오반장, and various international cuisine such as Chinese food in MAO 마오, and of course western cuisines; THE TREE and Italian flavours Colamercato, all of this can you find here in Haeundae.

The Shinsegae Centum City located in Haeundae, Busan boasts size that is the largest department store in the world, being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Having the Kyobo Book Store, CGV cinema, Spa Land and the Ice Rink, this place not only has a great reputation on its size but also provides convenience for customers.

Before the Shinsegae Department Store came into the Centum City, there was the Lotte DepartmentStore.

There were a lot of concerns on the Shinsegae Dept. Store coming in just besides the Lotte Dept. Store, but after the Shinsegae Dept. Store came in the Centum City has become the key point of shopping and calls together more people to the spot.

At the Centum City subway station, line no.2, you can enter both the Shinsegae Dept. Store and the Lotte Dept. Store. As a dept. store that shows off its large size, the entrance of the Shinsegae Dept. Store that is connected to the subway is also pretty splendid. There is also a place for people to take a break and an exhibition area so it is always crowded with people.

At the Shinsegae Dept. Store of the Centum City you can not only enjoy various domestic and foreign brands, but also various amenities. Almost all kinds of famous brands have been opened here

At the food section in the basement floor, you can enjoy mouth-watering food of various kinds. Not only fried chips or bakery that you can enjoy at the spot, but there is also the specialty of Germany, which is the Schneeballen. And there is also a space to eat on the spot. There is a food park at the 4^th floor and also a special food court at the 9^th floor, but you can also enjoy your meal at this food section on the basement floor.

As any other dept. stores, there are the imported luxury brands, cosmetics and fashion accessories on the 1^st floor, and as you go upstairs you can enjoy the fashion items. As it is large in size there are many brands here, so you can enjoy a more convenient shopping.

Inside the Shinsegae Dept. Store of Centum City there is this wonderful lighting at the center, creating a luxurious atmosphere. The escalator on the other side is in a circular shape, making customers look around the dept. store more leisurely. You can see this kind of great attraction only at the Shinsegae Dept. Store of Centum City!

Since the dept. store is so large in size, time flies by just shopping around all day. Almost all kinds of goods and brands here, so you can find almost all things that you need here.

At the food park on the 4^th floor you can order all kinds of food such as Korean food, Western food, Chinese food, Japanese food, snacks and fast food. There is an ice rink at the center so you can enjoy skating, and also watch people skate as you enjoy your meal. There are people who eat here after they have visited the dept. store, but also those who have visited the dept. store just to have a meal.

This is the view of the Centum City from the 5^th floor. There is the Cinema Theater which is one of the landmarks of the Centum City. Also the Suyeong Riverside comes into sight. The Shinsegae Dept. Store of Centum City sticks out not only because it is located at the center of the Centum City, but also because of its great size.

If you go to the rooftop which is on the 9^th floor there is the special food court and a unique space called the ‘Zooraji.’

The Zooraji have re-created the era that the dinosaurs have lived. ‘Zooraji’ is a compound word of ZOO and JURASSIC(the Jurassic period), and there are themes such as exploration, play and relaxation. There are amusement facilities for children so families accompanying children can take a short break here during their shopping, and for adults it becomes a walking course. Looking at the green grass, great amusement facilities and a shelter, it feels like it is a small park at the rooftop of the dept. store.

Since the opening in March 2009, the Shinsegae Dept. Store of Centum City has been popular with its sales increasing continually since then. The Shinsegae Dept. Store of Centum City that has settled down as a landmark of Busan along with the Lotte Dept. Store by the side. The perfect place for shopping and cultural facilities. Have a visit when you come to Centum City.

[HiKorea Hostel(Guest house) in Haeundae, Busan] Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Passing the Haeundae by far to the end of the Busan sea, there is the Haedong Yonggung Temple located in Gijang. When you say the word temple they are usually in the mountains, but the Haedong Yonggung Temple is a ‘Yonggung(underwater palace)’ just as its name. The merciful heart of Buddha is spread like the blue sea. Somewhere between late fall with yellow gingko trees and early winter, I visited the Haedong Yonggung Temple that ‘surely makes one wish come true.’

The Haedong Yonggung Temple has a quite long history, and it was founded by the great monk Naong, the consultant of King Gongmin in his 2^nd year of Goryeo(1376). Then over a long period of time of 6 centuries, they are reconstructing buildings, enshrining a new pagoda and keep on developing the place. A lot of Buddhist events take place, and on Buddha’s Birthday in April the lotus lantern festival is held and presents a magnificent spectacle. In March of the lunar year they carry on a big ceremony for the Dragon King, and because the sunrise comes first here, the New Year festival is held on the 1^st of January.

In order to go to the Yonggung Temple you have to take the number 181 bus. It is the best to take your own car or a taxi, but if you take a bus you can walk up slowly for about 10 minutes. The wind is a bit cold because the place meets the sea, so if you bring some warm clothes you can enjoy the great scenery and energy more comfortably.

Drowsing to the warm sunlight, before I knew it I arrived at the Yonggung Temple bus stop. There are small street vendors selling the ssiat hotteok, fish cake, kudzu juice and Buddhist goods lining the street. The place is quite noisy because of merchants and customers having friendly conversation. The first thing that greets us on our way to Yonggung Temple is the Twelve Zodiac Animal Deities. If you pass by the ‘Ibagu square’ which is a small square that guards the Twelve Zodiac Animal Deities, the traffic safety tower stands high. It is pretty unfamiliar and new to see the term traffic safety at a temple. They said that the Yonggung Temple is the only place that has a traffic safety tower. Indeed traffic is something that we cannot leave out from our daily lives, so it is not so strange to have a tower to wish so that we can use the traffic safely. The giant gingko tree and the blue sky get along beautifully with the tower.

As I mentioned before the slogan of the Haedong Yonggung Temple is ‘the place that surely makes one wish come true.’ So there are places to make a wish all over the place. People say if you touch the nose and the belly of the ‘deuknambul(statue for giving birth to a baby boy)’ you can give birth to a baby boy, so only those parts have become hand-stained. The ‘hageop seongchibul(scholastic achievement statue)’ that shows young monks reading books, and the ‘hwanggeum dweji(golden pig statue)’ that was made in the year 2008, the Year of the Golden Pig. The 108 longevity stairs that carry away agony, the basement mineral water that cures diseases, the samcheongji that tries one’s luck by throwing coins, and the heungryonggyo that becomes the ojakgyo(bridge that connects lovers) for lovers. Just circling around the temple once makes you feel lucky. The paper lanterns and the roof tiles are all full of people’s wishes. I guess all the wishes might be similar. Hoping for my dad’s business to go on well, hoping for my youngest daughter to go to a good university, hoping to love the person next to me here forever, hoping my parents to live a long and happy life, hoping my family to be healthy and happy….. If the wish that I have wished at Yonggung Temple comes true, it might not be just because of the energy of the temple. People that have visited from various places with a wish may have put on another stone on the big tower by heart. I didn’t come there to make a wish, but since I am here I thought that it would be nice if my wish would come true, so I repeated my wishes softly in my heart.

The Yonggung Temple is famous for its magnificent view. The harmony of the clear view of the ocean and the temple is new but also comfortable. If an underwater palace really did exist, will it be something like this? A splendid but simple temple, the chilsung tower that is high up to the back of the blue sky, and the pine tree that is spread out widely makes a beautiful harmony. Also the Haesu Gwaneum Daebul (Sea water Great Goddess Buddha) looks benevolently to the sea, and she is said to be a miraculous Buddha that makes your wish come true if you pray with all your might, so if you visit there don’t forget to make a wish. The Daeungbojeon located in the center of the temple was completed in March 2007 with the traditional style of Silla, and its dignity is great even from faraway but I recommend to go look at it from nearby. There isn’t any eave and rafter that were carelessly made. The patterns on the doors are plain fancy. But they are not luxurious or light so I looked at it for a long time.

Like this, the Haedong Yonggung Temple is a nice place to look at it from both faraway or from nearby. Since it is not that large, it is pretty leisurely to walk around slowly. It is a place where even street cats walk along the stone ways, so don’t hurry up and feel with your heart. So that the tired mind can take a rest at the sound of Gwanseumbosal(Avalokitesvara Guan Yin/the Goddess of Mercy) that echoes over the whole temple.

Nampodong is the biggest downtown in Busan and is considered as a tourist attraction of Busan along with the Jagalchi Market. There were many cinemas from the old days, so there is the BIFF(Busan Film Festival) street which is the bigggest festival in Busan, and there are many events that take place there. You can also find the handprints of actors at the BIFF street.

The peculiar attraction of Nampodong is that you can feel the fragrance of the modern times to the atmosphere of the modern city. There are different moods on each streets and alleys, and from an alley of street stalls with people seeing fortunetellers and reading tarot cards, there are alleys with street stalls selling the ‘seed’ Chinese pancakes(Ssiat Hotteok) that have become the specialty of Busan and snacks. At the street stalls that sell the Ssiat Hotteok there are many people waiting in line for their turn. After the Ssiat Hotteok of Nampodong had been introduced on TV several times, it had to pay the penalty of fame, and has become a must-try food for tourists that visit Busan.

The streets of Nampodong shine with neon signs of various colors at night. To the back of the buildings at are the symbols of Busan, there shows the Busan Tower at the Yongdusan Park. There is the Gwangbokro-Bosudong Bookstore Alley-Yongdusan Park-Jagalchi Market-International Market near the Nampodong area, so it is always crowded with people.

In between the small alleys there are overflowing restaurants, bars and cloth shops. So there are people who say they think of fancy signs shining when they hear the word ‘Nampodong.’

Starting from the franchise coffee shops to café with fabulous interior, there are many café that take place at Nampodong.

At another street there are street stalls that sell various kinds of accessories, fashion items and food that light up the street. This place feels more like a market, and if you follow this street there are many vintage shops. Since Nampodong is nearby the port, it has been an animated place of import and export from the old times, so there are many cloth shops that sell vintage clothes imported from overseas at Nampodong. Following the trend, these days many shops just decorate their interior in vintage style, and sell vintage style clothes according to their individuality. So if you take a walk looking into those vintage shops, you can get nice clothes with cheap prices, so many people visit this place. Moreover, there are many cloth shops that have unique characteristics not only in vintage style, so there are many people who visit Nampodong just to buy clothes.

The Gwangbokro is the main street of the Nampodong area. This is the street where the famous Nampodong Tree Festival of Busan is held. Through the street improvement business of Jung-gu, Busan, the signs have been organized and street lights, benches and sculptures have been set up, making the view much tidier. Faraway you can also see the Gwangbok branch of Lotte Dept. Store.

Among the various festivals at Busan, the ‘Christmas Tree Cultural Festival’ is quite popular among many people. Setting Christmas as the starting point, Nampodong in December is indeed a place for festivals. The streets are lit up with beautiful lights on trees, and snowflakes are hung on them. People enjoy the tree festival at Nampodong with excitement and thrill of the end of the year. At this time of the year, men and women of all ages enjoy the great lightings and the atmosphere of the festivals.

Nampodong is close to the Busan station and the Busan passenger ship terminal, so tourists visit this place easily. Also Nampodong is not a main street that you can find at any place but a place that holds the history of Busan as it is, so it has a lot more meaning in it. The modern history museum of Busan or the Choryang Ibagu Street, Bosudong Bookstore Alley and the democratic park are the places that embody the history of Busan just as they are.

The Christmas Tree Cultural Festival this year starts with the opening lighting ceremony at 7 o’clock P.M. on Saturday, November 30^th, and on the 25^th of December, on Christmas, there is a Christmas event being held, and on the 5^th of January, 2014, there will be an ending event of turning the lights off. How about making great memories of winter at Nampodong, the symbol of Busan this year-end?

When you hear the word Busan, the thing that comes into your mind is the ‘sea,’ and if you think of the sea the thing that comes into your mind is definitely the fresh seafood. The Jagalchi Market that has a long history in Busan is a typical tourist sight of Busan. The Jagalchi Market that lies from Nampodong Jung-gu to Chungmudong Seo-gu in Busan is nearby the Nampodong area which is the main downtown of Busan, so there are many tourists. There is a story that says the reason the market was namee ‘Jagalchi’ was because there were many ‘jagal(pebbles)’ in the area, and another story that says that it came from the word ‘galchi(hairtail).’

If you enter the Jagalchi Market, you can smell the somewhat fishy smell of the seafood. There are many sushi restaurants because you can dress and eat fresh-caught seafood on the spot. Recently due to the radiation leak of Japan the sales are slowing down a little, but since it is the biggest fish market in Busan, the Jagalchi Market is always crowded with people. The grilled fish from fresh-caught fish is the best food in the Jagalchi Market. When you enter the Jagalchi Market you can easily find restaurants that sell grilled fish, and you can pass by the owners of the restaurants that call people to come in. Along with the grilled fish, grilled sea eel is also the famous food here. When mealtime comes, your mouth gets watered from the delicious smell of the grilled fish being cooked in the restaurants.

There are many bystanders that watch the people dressing the fresh-caught fish with great tact, and you can see a lot of seafood that are alive moving around. As one lays out crabs that have been caught, the fish that scatter around and flop about look pretty fresh.

If you go through the Jagalchi Market to the beach there is a small waterfront park. There is the Yeongdo Bridge right next to it, and you can also see large ships fishing nearby. The Yeongdo Bridge is a bridge that gets connected to Yeongdo-gu of Busan, and before that there is the Gwangbok branch of the Lotte Dept. Store. Many tourists visit this place because they can see the sea, and you can also easily find the elderly that have visited the market taking a break. You can also take the chug boat at the dock to go on a sea travel to Yeongdo.

Famous for its way of speaking ‘Oiso(come), Boiso(look), Saiso(buy),’ at the Jagalchi Market you can not only find fresh seafood but also the passion of people working hard at their site of life and the energy of frugal people that have come to the market for shopping. You can hear the rough but affectionate unique dialect of Busan, and it is full of energy here. The expression ‘Jagalchi Ajuma(madam)’ came from our mothers that have started to sell at the Jagalchi Market during the Korean War for living,

The auction for seafood starts at early dawn here, a little earlier than other places, and closes at about sunset. So if you visit here around evening everything has ended and is silent. For those of you visiting the Jagalchi Market for the first time, if you come here before sunset you can see the Jagalchi Market full of energy.

If you visit the waterfront park at night again, there is whole different scenery in front of you. Lights that have been lit up shine and sparkle being reflected to the seawater. And at the fish market where a big ship was anchored during daytime you can see the merchants closing down their business for the day. To the back of the market the street lights of Bumindong embroider the night. The unique scenery of the mountain village is pretty unusual.

The Jagalchi Market is a historical place with its history of more than 100 years. The Jagalchi Market where the joys and sorrows of the commoners remain untouched is surely fit to be called the symbol of Busan.

ATTRACTIONS IN HAEUNDAE, TOP 10 !!

1. Haedong Yonggung Temple

: Haedong Yonggung Temple is a Buddhist temple in Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea.

2. Gwangalli Beach

: Gwangalli Beach  is a beach in Busan, South Korea. It is located at Gwangan 2dong,Suyeong-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, west of Haeundae Beach. It sits inside a cove spanned by the Gwangan Bridge and covers 82,000 square meters over a length of 1.4 km and a width of 25 to 110 metres, in a curved in a half-moon shape with fine sand. Adjacent are alleys with restaurants, coffee shops and nightclubs. Because of its popularity, city officials are pushing for improving water quality around the beaches.

3. Haeundae Beach

: Along the 12 km of coastline is Busan's most popular beach, and with Seogwipo's, it is one of the most famous beaches in South Korea. Because of its easy access from downtown Busan, the beach is busy year round with several kinds of beach festivals.

4. DongBaek Island

: Set at one end of the Haeundae beach, Dongbaek Island does not need a boat to get there. It is now joined to the mainland. The island is a small hill with a park. There is a walkway built right around it. 

There are a number of view points along the way to stop and take in the landscape. The most spectacular being in the evening, when the Gwangali bridge is lit up. The park is worth exploring.

5. APEC Naru Park

: This purpose-built building was the site of the 2005 APEC summit and is preserved for visitors to see where the world leaders met, including where they sat in the Korean-themed round chamber, and even shows samples of the swag they collected. 

6. Busan Aquarium

: Busan Aquarium is an aquarium located in Haeundae Beach, South Korea.

There are about 250 species and up to 35,000 marine animals on display. The main tank contains 3,000,000 litres (790,000 US gal) of water, and the animals can be viewed through acrylic windows or from the 80-metre (260 ft) underwater tunnel. There are 40 exhibits, which include penguins, otters, piranha, sea jellies and a touch tank for a close up "hands on" look at a variety of sea creatures.

7. BEXCO (Busan Exhibition & Convention Center)

: Busan Exhibition and Convention Center is a convention and exhibition center located in Centum City, Haeundae-gu, Busan, South Korea.

It has hosted a variety of events, notability as a concert venue for Koreans as well as international artists.

8. Haeundae Dalmaji-gil Road

: A beautiful wooded walk set on the side of a mountain, overlooking the sea! Can it get better - yes. The legend goes that this spot is the favorite for couples on Full moon days, because a prayer to the Moon God (before he starts diminishing) would certainly get answered.

: The Gwangan Bridge is a suspension bridge. It connects Haeundae-gu to Suyeong-gu. The road surface is about 6,500 meters long, with the bridge as a whole spanning 7,420 meters. It is the second longest bridge in the country after the Incheon Bridge in Korea.

: The Busan Cinema Center (also called "Dureraum," meaning enjoying seeing movies all together in Korean) is the official, exclusive venue of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), where its opening and closing ceremonies take place, located in Centum City, Busan, South Korea. As of July 2013, it has the Guinness World Record for the longest cantilever roof.
